Indications

  • Blood pressure control in acute hypotensive states
  • Adjunct in treatment of cardiac arrest and profound hypotension

Pharmacology

  • Direct-acting sympathomimetic
  • Stimulates beta1- and alpha-adrenergic receptors
  • Causes vasoconstriction
  • Raises systolic and diastolic BP

Interaction

  • Contradicted during cyclopropane and halothane anesthesia

Contraindications

  • Hypotension from blood volume deficits
  • Mesenteric or peripheral vascular thrombosis
  • Anesthesia-related cardiac arrhythmias
  • Not for continuous use without blood volume replacement

Overdose Effects

  • Headache

  • Dilution with 5% glucose injection with or without sodium chloride
