Description
Ursotab is used to reduce the cholesterol saturation of bile and to promote the dissolution of gallstones.
Pharmacology
- Decrease in secretion of cholesterol in bile
- Reduction of cholesterol absorption
- Suppression of liver cholesterol synthesis
- Promotion of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes formation
- Enhancement of removal of cholesterol from the gallbladder into the intestine
- Improvement of cholestatic liver diseases by protecting cholangiocytes and stimulating hepatobilliary secretion
Dosage & Administration
- 8-12 mg/kg/day for Dissolution of Gall stones
- 10-15 mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses for Primary Billiary Cirrhosis
- 600 mg/day for Acute Viral Hepatitis
- 300 mg/day for Alcoholic Fatty Liver
- 25-30 mg/kg/day for Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
- 13-15 mg/kg/day for Dissolution of Gallstones and Non-Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis
Interaction
- Avoid use with oestrogenic hormones
- Avoid concomitant administration with bile-acid binding drugs including antacids, charcoal, and cholestyramine
Contraindications
- Non-functioning gall-bladder
- Calcified and pigmented gallstones
- Inflammatory bowel disease
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Gallstone opacilication
- Pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B. No evidence of harm has been reported in pregnancy. It has been effectively used for the treatment of cholestasis of pregnancy during the last trimester without any side effects. Problems have not been documented in humans regarding breast feeding.
Precautions & Warnings
It should be used cautiously in those with liver disease.
