Indications

  • Treatment of single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, and hydatid

Description

  • Benzimidazole anthelmintic
  • Active against nematodes and some cestodes
  • Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
  • Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum anthelmintic
  • Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activities
  • Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
  • Exerts anthelmintic effect by binding and inhibiting parasite tubulin polymerization

Dosage & Administration

  • 400 mg single dose for various infestations in adults and children over 2 years
  • 200 mg single dose for children of 1-2 years
  • Adult dosage for hydatid disease: 400 mg twice daily for patients over 60 kg
  • Child dosage for hydatid disease: 15 mg/kg body weight daily, to a maximum total daily dose of 800 mg
  • 400 mg once daily for five days in giardiasis

  • No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions

Contraindications

  • Not recommended for neonates
  • Reduced dose for children under 10 kg
  • Avoid use in pregnant women
  • No evidence for dosage alteration in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure

  • Changes in liver enzymes
  • Rarely reversible alopecia

  • Blood disorders including leucopenia and pancytopenia

Precautions & Warnings

  • Blood counts and liver function tests before treatment and during each cycle
  • Exclude pregnancy before starting treatment
  • Use with constant medical supervision for echinococcosis treatment
