Description

  • Benzimidazole anthelmintic
  • Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
  • Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
  • Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization

Pharmacology

  • Broad spectrum anthelmintic
  • Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
  • Depletes energy level leading to immobilization
  • Extensively metabolized, mainly in the liver
  • Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract

Dosage & Administration

  • 400 mg single dose for certain types of infestations
  • 400 mg daily for 3 days in cases of strongyloidiasis or taeniasis
  • 200 mg single dose for children of 1-2 years
  • Not recommended for children under 1 year
  • 400 mg twice daily for 28 days for hydatid disease
  • 15 mg/kg body weight daily in two divided doses for patients weighing less than 60 kg
  • 400 mg once daily for 5 days in giardiasis

Interaction

  • No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions

Contraindications

  • Not normally used in neonates
  • Dose reduction for children weighing less than 10 kg
  • Not recommended in pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
  • No evidence to alter dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure

  • Blood counts and liver function tests before and during treatment
  • Caution in breastfeeding
  • Exclusion of pregnancy before treatment
  • Constant medical supervision in Echinococcosis treatment
