Indications
- Bronchial asthma

Pharmacology
- Bronchodilator
- Inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
- Selective smooth muscle relaxation
- Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibition of leukotriene production
Dosage & Administration
- Elderly dosage: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Adults dosage: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Alternative dosage for children based on age and body weight
- Extended release tablet option for daily dosage
Interaction
- Not to be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Limitation of caffeine consumption
- Caution with sympathomimetic drugs
- Potential drug interaction with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, and propanolol
- Potential increased clearance with phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, and cigarette smoking
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- During lactation

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited clinical evidence during pregnancy
- Use of the drug during pregnancy should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
- Contraindicated during lactation
- No interference with ability to drive or use machines
Precautions & Warnings
- Hepatic clearance reduction factors: age, congestive cardiac decompensation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, severe liver disease, concomitant infections, and the concurrent administration of certain drugs
- Monitoring of blood levels recommended in certain cases
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and renal impairment
- No risk of addiction or dependence
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms: severe cardiac arrhythmias, tonic-clonic seizure
- Discontinuation of treatment may be required
- Lower dosage recommended after signs and symptoms subside
- Symptomatic treatment for cardiovascular collapse in case of overdose
