Indications
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Alleviating complications of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
- Symptomatic treatment of allergies such as hayfever, and urticaria
Pharmacology
Ketotifen has anti-allergic properties, acts as an antihistamine, and possesses marked anti-anaphylactic properties effective in preventing asthmatic attacks. It exerts a sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food; may be increased to 2 mg twice daily in severe cases
- Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food; starting with 0.5 to 1 mg at night for easily sedated patients
- Elderly: Same as adult dose or as advised by the physician
Interaction
Potentiates the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohols. May cause a reversible fall in platelet count when used concomitantly with oral antidiabetic agents
Contraindications
Avoid use with oral antidiabetic agents. Caution advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Side Effects
Drowsiness, dry mouth, slight dizziness at the beginning of treatment that usually disappears after a few days
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
Continue previous treatment for at least two weeks after starting Kiti to avoid exacerbation of asthma. Caution in case of intercurrent infection. Impaired reactions may occur during initial treatment. Avoid alcoholic drinks
Overdose Effects
May cause confusion, drowsiness, headache, bradycardia, respiratory depression. Gastric lavage or emesis is recommended for elimination of the drug
