Deprolin (20 mg+10 mg+2.5 mg)/5 ml (Syrup)

Indications

• temporarily relieves symptoms due to common cold
• relieves symptoms due to hay fever
• relieves symptoms due to upper respiratory allergies

Symptoms Relieved

• cough
• runny nose
• sneezing
• itching of nose or throat
• itchy watery eyes
• nasal congestion
• reduces swelling of nasal passages

Pharmacology

• mixture of antitussive, decongestant and antihistamine agent
• dextromethorphan acts on cough centre in medulla
• phenylephrine shrinks blood vessels in nasal passages
• triprolidine provides relief dependent on histamine release

Dosage

• 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) for adults & children 12 years and older every 4 hours
• ½ teaspoonful (2.5 ml) for children 6 to under 12 years every 4 hours
• to be used with caution for children 2 to 6 years
• not for children below 2 years old

Administration

• take with or without food
• measure liquid doses carefully
• use the measuring device that comes with the medicine

Drug Interaction

• avoid certain MAO inhibitors
• exercise caution with antihistamines, antispasmodics, beta blockers, drugs for Parkinson’s disease, guanethidine, inhaled anesthetics, etc.

Contraindications

• avoid in patients with liver disease or asthma
• contraindicated in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors
• contraindicated in patients with severe hypertension or severe coronary artery disease

Pregnancy & Lactation

• best avoided during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

• may cause drowsiness
• avoid driving or operating machinery
• avoid alcoholic drinks
• use with caution in patients with epilepsy, prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma, etc.
• consult a physician if symptoms do not improve within one week or accompanied by high fever

Overdose Effects

• hospital admission advised in case of overdose
• may produce respiratory depression
• nervous stimulation
• convulsions
• treatment includes emptying the stomach by aspiration or gastric lavage
