Indications
- Treatment of inflammation and pain associated with ocular surgery
- Treatment of uveitis
- Treatment of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (CME)
- Treatment of ocular surface diseases like blepharitis and corneal inflammation
Pharmacology
- Corticosteroids inhibiting the inflammatory response
- Delay or slow healing
- Inhibition of edema and fibrin deposition
- Inhibition of capillary dilation and leukocyte migration
- Inhibition of scar formation associated with inflammation
- Induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins
- Control of biosynthesis of inflammation mediators
- Structural similarity to other corticosteroids
Dosage & Administration
- Instill 1 drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye 4 times daily post-surgery
- Continuing throughout the first 2 weeks of the post-operative period
- Subsequent taper based on the response
- Different dosage for endogenous anterior uveitis, blepharitis, and pseudophakic cystoid macular edema
Interaction

Contraindications
- Contraindicated in active viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Contraindicated in mycobacterial infection of the eye
- Contraindicated in fungal diseases of ocular structures
Side Effects
- Elevated intraocular pressure
- Visual acuity and field defects
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Secondary ocular infection from pathogens including herpes simplex
- Perforation of the globe
- Various ocular adverse reactions associated with Cortiflu
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category C for pregnancy
- Embryotoxic and teratogenic effects in animal studies
- Potential risk to the embryo or fetus
- Unknown passage into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in glaucoma and cataract formation
- Monitoring of intraocular pressure if used for 10 days or longer
- Caution required in patients with a history of herpes simplex
- Risk of fungal infections
