Indications
- Primary hypercholesterolemia (type IIa and IIb)
- Coronary heart disease
- Elevated plasma cholesterol level
Pharmacology
- Cholesterol lowering agent
- Inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase activity
- Increased LDL receptor density
- Reduction in VLDL cholesterol
- Metabolized in the liver
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose of 10 mg/day
- Usual starting dose of 10 mg/day in the evening
- Maximum dose of 40 mg daily
- Recommended dosing range of 5-40 mg per day
Interaction
- Digoxin interaction
- Coumarin derivatives interaction
- Concomitant use with ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, NSAIDs
Contraindications
- Active liver disease
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- Women of childbearing age without adequate contraception
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
