Indications
- Single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid
Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against nematodes and cestodes
- Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
- Loss of cytoplasmic microtubules
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Blocks glucose uptake in helminths
- Depletes energy level for survival
- Immobilization of the parasite
- Exerts anthelmintic effect by binding and inhibiting parasite tubulin polymerization
- Extensively metabolized in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults and children over 2 years
- Different doses for Enterobius vermicularis, Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, strongyloidiasis, taeniasis
- Not recommended for children under 1 year
- Specific doses for hydatid disease, giardiasis
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not normally used in neonates
- Possible dose reduction for children weighing less than 10 kg
- Avoid during pregnancy and lactation
- No evidence for alteration in renal, hepatic or cardiac failure
