Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus
- To reduce risk of cardiovascular death in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease
Pharmacology
Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor that reduces renal glucose reabsorption and lowers the renal threshold for glucose, resulting in increased glucose excretion, weight loss, and reduced hyperglycemia
Dosage & Administration
Recommended dose of 10 mg once daily, may be increased to 25 mg once daily in tolerant patients
Interactions
- Increased urine volume with diuretics
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia with insulin or insulin secretagogues
- Not recommended for monitoring glycemic control with urine glucose tests or 1,5-AG assay
Contraindications
History of serious hypersensitivity to Empagliflozin or any of its ingredients, severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or dialysis

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not adequately studied in pregnant women
- Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus

Precautions & Warnings
Assessment of renal function recommended prior to initiation, avoid in patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m^2

Supportive measures for overdose, hemodialysis not studied for removal
