Indications

  • Treatment of Acute and chronic psychoses
  • Treatment of schizophrenia
  • Treatment of bipolar disorder
  • Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder

Pharmacology

  • Atypical psychotropic agent
  • Antagonist at neurotransmitter receptors
  • Affinity at serotonin, dopamine, histamine, and adrenergic receptors
  • Mechanism of action is unknown

Dosage & Administration

  • Administered twice daily
  • Initial dose titration for first four days
  • Dosage adjustments based on clinical response and tolerability

Interaction

  • Caution with concomitant use of medicines causing electrolyte imbalance
  • Increased clearance with thioridazine, carbamazepine, and phenytoin co-administration

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Quetiapine

  • Discontinue if neuroleptic malignant syndrome occurs
  • Caution in patients with cardiovascular disease or family history of QT prolongation

Use in Special Populations

  • Elderly use with caution
  • Lower daily therapeutic dose in elderly
  • Not indicated for use in children and adolescents

Overdose Effects

  • Survival reported in acute overdoses
  • No specific antidote
  • Intensive care procedures recommended
  • Treatment of refractory hypotension with appropriate measures
