Description
Benzimidazole anthelmintic
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Vermicidal activity
- Ovicidal activity
- Larvicidal activity
- Blockage of glucose uptake in helminths
- Depletion of energy level in helminths
- Immobilization of parasites
Dosage & Administration
- 400 mg single dose for certain infestations
- 400 mg daily for certain infestations for 3 consecutive days
- 200 mg single dose for children of 1-2 years
- Not recommended for children under 1 year
- 400 mg twice daily for 28 days for patients over 60 kg for hydatid disease
- 15 mg/kg body weight daily for patients under 60 kg for hydatid disease
- 400 mg once daily for 5 days for giardiasis

Contraindications
- Not to be used in neonates
- Possible reduction of dose for children under 10 kg
- Not recommended during pregnancy or in women thought to be pregnant
- No need for dose alteration in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Changes in liver enzymes
- Rarely reversible alopecia
- Rash
- Fever
- Blood disorders including leucopenia and pancytopenia
- Allergic shock if cyst leakage
- Convulsion and meningism in cerebral disease
Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoid during pregnancy and lactation unless benefits outweigh risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Blood counts and liver function tests before treatment and twice during each cycle
- Caution during breastfeeding
- Exclusion of pregnancy before treatment
- Continuous medical supervision for Echinococcosis treatment
