Dosage & Administration

Interaction
- Hypercalcemia risk with thiazide diuretics
- Hypocalcemia risk in digitalized patients
- Reduced calcium absorption with certain foods
- Effect of phenytoin or barbiturates on Vitamin D3
- Decreased effect of Vitamin D3 with glucocorticoids
- Interaction with digitalis and other cardiac glycosides

Contraindications
- Absolute contraindications related to hypercalcemia, sarcoidosis, hyperparathyroidism, Vitamin-D3 overdosage, and severe renal failure
- Relative contraindications related to prolonged immobilization, renal stones, and severe hypercalciuria
Side Effects
- Mild gastrointestinal disturbances
- Skin rash with vitamin-D3 supplements
- Hypercalciuria and hypercalcemia with long term high dose treatment
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Increased requirements for calcium and vitamin-D3 during pregnancy and lactation
- Teratogenic effects of vitamin-D3 overdoses
- Passage of vitamin-D3 and its metabolites into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Careful supervision for patients with renal failure or hypercalciuria
- Periodic checks of plasma and urinary calcium levels
- Monitoring kidney function and urinary calcium levels with long term treatment
Overdose Effects
- Nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, loss of appetite, metallic taste, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and constipation
