Indications
- Active immunization against pneumococcal disease
- Recommended for children aged 2 years, adolescents, and adults
- Contains 25 micrograms of each of the 23 pneumococcal polysaccharide serotypes
- Dose of 0.5 mL
Pharmacology
- Prepared from purified pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide antigens
- Derived from the 23 serotypes accounting for approximately 90% of invasive pneumococcal disease types
Dosage & Administration
- Administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection
- Initial dose for adults and children of 2 years of age or older is 0.5 milliliter
- Revaccination dose of 0.5 milliliter
- Special dosing recommendations for elective splenectomy or the initiation of chemotherapy or other immunosuppressive treatment
Interaction
- Can be administered simultaneously with influenza vaccine using different needles and injection sites
Contraindications
- Allergic reactions to any component of the vaccine
- Fever, acute infection, or chronic diseases at the acute stage
- Uncontrolled epilepsy or other progressive diseases of the nervous system
Side Effects
- Common adverse reactions include injection-site pain/soreness/tenderness, swelling/induration, headache, erythema, asthenia/fatigue, and myalgia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly necessary
- Unknown excretion in human milk
- Caution warranted when administered to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Delay in use during significant febrile illness or other active infection
- Avoid intravascular or intradermal injection
- May not result in complete protection in all recipients
- Immediate availability of epinephrine for acute anaphylactic reaction
- Prophylactic antibiotic therapy should not be stopped after vaccination
