Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in adult patients
- Intolerance to oral iron or unsatisfactory response to oral iron
- Non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease
Description
- Colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with Carboxymaltose
- Carbohydrate polymer that releases iron
Dosage & Administration
- Stepwise approach for determination and administration of iron dose(s)
- Posology based on individual iron need, body weight, and haemoglobin (Hb) level
- Calculation and administration of maximum individual iron dose(s)
- Post-iron repletion assessments by the clinician

- Formal drug interaction studies not performed
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance, Ferric Carboxymaltose or its excipients
- Serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral iron products
- Anaemia not attributed to iron deficiency
- Evidence of iron overload or disturbances in iron utilisation
Side Effects
- Infrequent, usually mild side effects
- Nausea, headache, dizziness, hypertension, injection site reactions
- Alanine aminotransferase increased, hypophosphataemia
- Hypersensitivity, dysgeusia, tachycardia, hypotension, flushing, dyspnoea
- Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, pruritus, urticaria, rash, myalgia
- Back pain, arthralgia, muscle spasms, pyrexia, fatigue, chest pain, oedema peripheral
- Chills, aspartate aminotransferase increased, gamma glutamyl transferase increased
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled trials in pregnant women
- Benefit/risk evaluation required before use during pregnancy
- Unlikely risk to breast-fed child
Precautions & Warnings
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions reported
- Monitor for signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity
- Monitor for signs and symptoms of hypertension
- Laboratory test alterations in iron and transferrin bound iron
- Personnel and therapies immediately available for treatment of serious hypersensitivity reactions
Use in Special Populations
- Haemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients
- Single maximum daily injection dose of 200 mg iron should not be exceeded
- Not recommended in children under 14 years
Overdose Effects
- Excessive dosages may lead to accumulation of iron in storage sites
- Monitor iron parameters such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation
- Consider the use of an iron chelator for treatment
