Indications
- Hypertension

Pharmacology
- Adrenergic receptor-blocking agent
- Selective alpha 1-adrenergic and nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor-blocking actions
- Decrease in blood pressure
- Peak plasma levels occurring 1 to 2 hours after oral administration
- Plasma half-life of about 6 to 8 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended initial dosage of 100 mg twice daily for adults
- Maintenance dosage between 200 and 400 mg twice daily
- Higher dosage for severe hypertension
- Intravenous injection and infusion
- Specific dosages for various conditions like hypertension in pregnancy, following acute myocardial infarction, after stroke, and hypotensive anaesthesia
Interaction
- Enhanced hypotensive effects with halothane
- Care needed when used with Class I antiarrhythmic agents or calcium antagonists
- Reduced hypotensive effect when used with prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors
- Increased incidence of tremor with tricyclic antidepressants
- Increased bioavailability with cimetidine

- Hypersensitivity to the medicine
- Second or third degree heart block
- Uncontrolled heart failure
- Sick-sinus syndrome
- Cardiogenic shock
- Bronchial asthma or other obstructive lung disorders

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Teratogenic studies in rats and rabbits

Precautions & Warnings
- Rare reports of severe hepatocellular injury
- Reversible hepatic injury
- Caution in patients with hepatic impairment
- Use with caution in patients with peripheral vascular disease
Overdose Effects
- Excessive hypotension
- Excessive bradycardia
- Gastric lavage or induced emesis for removal
- Administer atropine for excessive bradycardia
- Administer digitalis glycoside and diuretic for cardiac failure
- Administer vasopressors for hypotension
- Administer epinephrine for bronchospasm
