Indications
- Reduction of elevated total cholesterol
- Reduction of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)
- Reduction of triglycerides (TG)
- Increase of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)
- Adjunct to diet for hypercholesterolemia
- Adjunct treatment for homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
Pharmacology
- Lowers plasma cholesterol
- Inhibits HMG-CoA reductase
- Reduces LDL production
- Inhibits absorption of cholesterol by small intestine
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended starting dose: 10/10 mg or 20/10 mg daily
- Dosage range: 10/10 mg to 80/20 mg daily
- Can be administered with or without food
- Dosage adjustment based on lipid levels
Interaction
- Risk of myopathy with concurrent administration of fibric acid derivatives
- Avoid coadministration with cyclosporine and gemfibrozil
- Enhanced risk of skeletal muscle effects with niacin
Contraindications
- Active liver disease
- Hypersensitivity to any component

- Caution with drugs decreasing endogenous steroid hormones

- No dosage adjustment in geriatric patients
