Indications

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by specific bacteria
  • Bone and Joint Infections caused by specific bacteria
  • Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea caused by specific bacteria
  • Early Lyme Disease (erythema migrans) caused by Borrelia burgdorferi
  • Septicemia caused by specific bacteria
  • Meningitis caused by specific bacteria
  • Switch therapy (Injectable to oral)

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
  • Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Clavulanic acid is a beta lactamase inhibitor

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for adolescents and adults
  • Dosage for paediatric patients
  • Can be taken without regard of food

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration of probenecid with Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid
  • Effect of drug reducing gastric acidity

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Pseudomembranous Colitis

  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Prolonged administration may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
  • Renal dysfunction
  • Anaphylaxis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Should be avoided in the first trimester if possible
  • Can be safely used in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections
  • Excreted into the breast milk in small quantities

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Given with care to patients with history of colitis
