Dosage
- 50 mg every 3 weeks for established osteoporosis and palliative therapy for disseminated breast cancer in women
- 50 mg every 2-3 weeks for protein deficiency states occurring after major surgery or trauma
- 50-200 mg per week for anemia due to chronic renal failure
- 50-150 mg per week for aplastic anemia
- 200 mg per week for anemia due to cytotoxic therapy
- 100 mg for chronic debilitating disease in the elderly
- 25-50 mg every 3 weeks for postsurgical and post-traumatic catabolism
- 50 mg every 2-3 weeks during glucocorticosteroid therapy
Administration
- Deep intramuscular injection
Interaction
- May cause local reaction at the injection site
- Potential side effects include virilism, hyperlipidemia, increased libido, hypertension, dysphonia, nausea, abnormal hepatic function, peliosis hepatis, acne, rash, pruritus, hirsutism, premature fusion of epiphyses, decreased urine flow, benign prostatic hyperplasia, priapism, enlarged penis or clitoris, amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, decreased sperm count, edema, decreased HDL, and increased hemoglobin
Contraindications
- Pregnancy
- Male breast carcinoma
- Prostatic carcinoma
- Patients allergic to peanuts & soya
- Hypersensitive to the active substance or to any of the excipients including arachis oil
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Contraindicated during pregnancy due to possible masculinization of fetus
- Insufficient data on use during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor patients with latent or overt cardiac failure, renal dysfunction, hypertension, or migraine
- Caution in incomplete statural growth, skeletal metastases of breast carcinoma, hypercalcemia, and liver dysfunction
- Discourage the use of anabolic steroids to enhance athletic ability
Overdose Effects
- Low acute toxicity in animals
- No reports of acute overdose in humans
