Indications
- Constipation of any etiology
- Relief from prolonged & recurrent constipation
- Bowel clearance before surgery, childbirth, or radiological investigations
Pharmacology
- Stimulant laxative
- Activates by colonic bacteria
- Stimulates nerve endings of the intestinal wall
- Results in colonic peristalsis
- Promotes water and electrolyte accumulation
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration
- Recommended to be taken at night for morning evacuation
- Start with the lowest dose and adjust as needed
- Maximum daily dose should not be exceeded
Interaction
- Risk of electrolyte imbalance with diuretics or corticosteroids
- Reduced laxative action with concurrent antibiotics
