Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Symptomatic treatment of Urticaria
Pharmacology
- Long-acting non-sedative antagonist of histamine H1-receptors
- Antagonizes platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibits degranulation of mast cells induced by immunological and non-immunological stimuli
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dose: 10 mg once a day
- May be taken with or without food
- Children aged 2 to 11 years have specific dosage instructions based on weight
Interaction
- Concomitant administration with ketoconazole or erythromycin increases systemic exposure
- Caution when co-administered with statins, CNS depressants, or alcohol
- Avoid simultaneous intake with grapefruit or grapefruit juice
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Rupatadine or any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Common: asthenia, dizziness, drowsiness
- Uncommon: appetite increased, arthralgia, back pain, concentration impaired, constipation, cough, diarrhea, dry throat
- Rare: palpitations, tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless potential benefit outweighs potential risk
- Not recommended during lactation unless potential benefits for the mother justify potential risk to the infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with known prolongation of the QT interval
- Caution in patients with uncorrected hypokalemia
- Caution in elderly patients
- Not recommended in patients with impaired kidney or liver function
Use in Special Populations
- Caution in elderly
- Safety and efficacy not established in patients less than 12 years of age
- Not recommended in patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Most common adverse reaction: somnolence
- Symptomatic treatment and supportive measures required in case of accidental ingestion of very high doses
