Pharmacology

  • Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
  • Facilitates Ca+2 transport
  • Decreases hepatic glucose output

InitialDose

  • 40-80 mg daily

MaximumDose

  • Up to 320 mg daily in divided doses

Administration

  • Take before meal
  • Take with a glass of water
  • Swallow whole, do not chew or crush
  • Always eat a meal after taking the tablet(s)

CombinationTherapy

  • May be prescribed with metformin, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, thiazolidinediones, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists, or insulin

Overdose

  • Contact doctor or hospital immediately
  • Symptoms of hypoglycemia
  • Unconscious patients should not be given food or drink
