Description

  • Costin is a calcium carbonate tablet used for the treatment and prevention of calcium deficiency in various conditions such as hypoparathyroidism, achlorhydria, chronic diarrhea, vitamin D deficiency, pregnancy, lactation, menopause, pancreatitis, renal failure, alkalosis, hyperphosphataemia, hyperacidity, acid indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, upset stomach, and osteoporosis.

Dosage instructions

  • Oral use
  • Recommended adult doses: 540-2000 mg/day for antacid use, 1250-3750 mg/day as a dietary supplement, 1200-1500 mg/day in pregnancy and lactation, 2.5-9.0 gm/day in chronic renal failure
  • Children's doses are half of adult doses

Pharmacology

  • Reacts with gastric acid to produce a salt and water
  • Increases gastric pH, diminishing pepsin activity
  • Up to 30% oral calcium load may be absorbed

Interaction

  • May enhance cardiac effects of digoxin and other cardiac glycosides
  • May interfere with absorption of tetracycline preparations
  • Modification of vitamin D therapy may be required in chronic renal failure

Contraindications

  • Hypercalcaemia
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Hypercalciuria
  • Nephrolithiasis
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • Concomitant digoxin therapy
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Renal or cardiac disease

Side effects

  • GI tract irritation
  • Constipation
  • Rarely produces hypercalcaemia

Special populations

  • Safe and effective in children and infants with chronic renal failure
  • Constipation may be troublesome in elderly patients with renal failure

Pregnancy lactation

  • Widely used in pregnancy for oral calcium supplementation or antacid therapy
  • Can be used in lactating women
