Pharmacology
Citicoline activates the biosynthesis of structural phospholipids in the neuronal membrane, promotes rapid repair of injured cell surface & mitochondrial membrane, increases the level of various neurotransmitters like acetylcholine & dopamine, and has neuroprotective effects in situations of hypoxia & ischemia.
Dosage & Administration
- Oral:
- Immediate treatment of stroke due to a clot
- For decline in thinking skills due to stroke
- Chronic cerebrovascular disease
- Injection:
- 1 to 2 injections daily
- Adjust dosage according to the severity
- Can be administered through intramuscular or intravenous route
- Geriatric use: No dosage adjustment required
Interaction
Vasoactin may enhance the effects of levodopa, carbidopa & entacapone, and must not be administered with products containing meclophenoxate.
Contraindications
Must not be administered to patients with hypertonia of the parasympathetic nervous system.
Side Effects
Occasionally Vasoactin may exert stimulating action of the parasympathetic system as well as a fleeting & discrete hypotensive effect.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Citicoline should be used during pregnancy & lactation only if the potential benefits justify the potential risks.
Precautions & Warnings
Vasoactin is known to cause increased dizziness or drowsiness, may cause hypotension and should not be consumed with alcohol. Patients should not operate any type of machinery throughout the course of treatment.
