Indications
- Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Pharmacology
- Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
- Improve urine flow rate and reduce BPH symptoms
- Absorption of 90% under fasting conditions
- High plasma protein binding (94% to 99%)
- Extensive metabolism in the liver
- Elimination half-life ranging from five to fifteen hours
Dosage & Administration
- Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg daily after meal at night
- Dose may be increased to 0.8 mg after 2 to 4 weeks
- Swallow whole with a glass of water
- Should not be crunched or chewed
Interaction
- Concurrent administration with other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
- No interaction with atenolol, enalapril or nifedipine
- Potential interactions with cimetidine, frusemide, diclofenac, and warfarin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tamsulosin hydrochloride
- History of orthostatic hypotension
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Risk of reduction in blood pressure and syncope
- Exclusion of other conditions with similar symptoms before therapy initiation

- Postural hypotension
- Palpitations
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Rarely transient postural symptoms during orthostatic provocation testing
- Not advised for use in patients with micturition syncope
- No data available on effects on ability to drive or operate machines
Overdose Effects
- Acute hypotension likely after overdosage
- Cardiovascular support, volume expanders, vasopressors may be necessary
- Renal function monitoring and general supportive measures recommended
