Indications

  • Treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD)

Pharmacology

  • Enhances central noradrenergic and serotonergic activity
  • Acts as an antagonist at central presynaptic α2-adrenergic inhibitory autoreceptors
  • Antagonist of 5-HT<sub>2</sub> and 5-HT<sub>3</sub> receptors
  • Potent antagonist of histamine (H<sub>1</sub>) receptors
  • Moderate peripheral &alpha;1-adrenergic antagonist
  • Moderate antagonist at muscarinic receptors

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended starting dose: 15 mg/day
  • Effective dose range: 15 to 45 mg/day
  • Adult dose administration in the evening or prior to sleep
  • No recommended use in children
  • Guidelines for missed dose

Interaction

  • Clinically significant drug-drug interactions
  • Contraindicated with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI)
  • May interrupt the metabolism or activity of Carbamazepine, Phenytoin or Cimetidine
  • Avoid Alcohol &amp; Diazepam

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Mirtazapine or to any of the excipients
  • Concomitant use with a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor

Side Effects

  • Common side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased appetite, weight gain
