Description
- Essential for healthy bones and teeth
- Prevents rickets, osteomalacia, and osteoporosis
- Has a vital role in boosting immunity

- Absorbed in the small intestine

- Increases the absorption of calcium
- Stored in tissues such as fat and muscle
- Eliminated via feces and urine
- Adult dosage: 40000 IU once weekly for 7 weeks for Vitamin D3 deficiency
- Adult maintenance therapy dosage: 1400-2000 IU/day
- Children (12-18 years) dosage: 20000 IU once every 2 weeks for 6 weeks for Vitamin D3 deficiency
- Film-coated tablet dosage: 1000 IU (1-2 tablets) daily
- Oroflash or chewable tablets dosage: 1000-2000 IU daily
- Syrup dosage varies for different age groups
- Injection dosage varies for prevention and treatment of deficiency
- Many drugs cause Vitamin D3 deficiencies
- Contraindicated in diseases associated with hypercalcemia
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Vitamin D3
- Symptoms of overdose include anorexia, lassitude, nausea, and vomiting
- Safe use of doses up to 4000 IU during pregnancy
- Excreted in breast milk
- Plasma-calcium concentration should be monitored in patients receiving high doses
- Safety & efficacy not established in children under 12 years
- Overdose can lead to hypervitaminosis D
