Pharmacology
- Complex of iodine and an organic polymer
- Prolongs germicidal activity of iodine
- Rapid microbicidal activity against bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining
- Active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days
- Apply once or twice a week for prevention
- Apply full strength as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Use undiluted or diluted with warm water for gargling or rinsing
- Surgical scrub application guidelines
- Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area
- Instill 1 drop 4 times daily or as required for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Hypothyroidic effect with concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Thyroid disorders
- Lithium therapy
- Severe burnt patients
- Children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects with severe burns or large denuded areas of skin
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding
- Not recommended for use in pregnant and lactating women
- No experience regarding the safety of the Povidone eye drops in human pregnancy or lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Consult Registered Physician for deep or puncture wounds or serious burns
- Avoid 'pooling' beneath the patient during preoperative prepping
- Special caution needed for patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Do not use for more than 14 days for gargling or rinsing
- Avoid regular use in children under 6 years of age
- Remove white gold jewelry before using Povix
