Indications
- Relieves dry (non-productive) cough
- Used for pre & post-operative cough sedation
- Can be used in acute cough of any etiology
- Can be used in whooping cough and cough due to acute lower respiratory tract infections
Pharmacology
- Acts directly on the brain's cough center to suppress cough
- Safe and non-sedating
- Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration
- Extremely protein-bound
Dosage & Administration
- Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet: 2-3 tablets daily for adults
- Butamirate Citrate syrup: 15 ml 4 times daily for adults
- Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet for adolescents over 12 years old: 1-2 tablets daily
- Butamirate Citrate syrup for children (3-6 yrs): 5 ml 3 times daily
- Butamirate Citrate syrup for children (6-12 yrs): 10 ml 3 times daily
- Butamirate Citrate syrup for adolescents: 15 ml 3 times daily
- Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops for children ( 2 months- 1 yrs): 0.50 ml 4 times daily
- Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops for children (1-3 yrs): 0.75 ml 4 times daily
Interaction
- Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient
Side Effects
- Good tolerance observed
- Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo in rare cases
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Can be cautiously used during the remainder of pregnancy if indicated by a physician
- Carefully weigh benefits against risks during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Suppresses the cough reflex
- Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
- Consult a doctor if the cough persists for more than 7 days (3 days in children under 12 years)
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension
- Standard emergency procedures should be followed
