Indications
- Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
- Relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
Pharmacology
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Exhibits anti-inflammatory properties
- Exhibits analgesic properties
- Exhibits antipyretic properties
- Prodrug that undergoes hepatic biotransformation to active component 6-methoxy-2-naphthylacetic acid (6MNA)
- Potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Available as 500 mg & 750 mg tablets
- Recommended starting dose is 1000 mg taken as a single dose with or without food
- Maximum starting doses for patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency
- Not recommended for use in pediatric patients
Interaction
- May diminish the antihypertensive effect of ACE-inhibitors
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients
- Experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Contraindicated for the treatment of peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects: Diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, etc.
- Central Nervous System effects: Dizziness, headache, fatigue, etc.
- Dermatologic effects: Pruritus, rash
- Special Senses effects: Tinnitus
- Miscellaneous: Edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Not recommended during the third trimester of pregnancy
- Not recommended for use in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Associated with renal papillary necrosis and abnormal renal pathology during long-term administration to animals
- Risk of renal toxicity in patients with conditions leading to a reduction in renal blood flow or blood volume
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms following acute NSAIDs overdoses
- Management by symptomatic and supportive care following a NSAID overdose
- No specific antidotes
