Composition

  • Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU
  • Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU
  • Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP

Pharmacology

  • Calcium is useful for the prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis and associated fractures
  • Vitamin D aids in Calcium absorption from the GI tract and stimulates bone formation
  • Coral Calcium has a structure similar to human bone, ensuring better absorption
  • Vitamin D3 aids in the absorption of Calcium from GI tract and helps maintain Calcium balance in the body

Dosage & Administration

  • One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician
  • Effervescent tablet should be dissolved in a glass of water and taken orally, preferably with food

Interaction

  • Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
  • Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
  • Ion exchange resins such as cholestyramine or laxatives may reduce the gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
  • Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations
  • Hypercalcaemia may increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides during treatment with calcium and vitamin D
  • Bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride should be taken at least three hours before Cocavit D to avoid reduced gastrointestinal absorption
  • Oxalic acid (found in spinach and rhubarb) and phytic acid (found in whole cereals) may inhibit calcium absorption

Contraindications

  • Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
  • Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
  • Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
  • Severe renal insufficiencies
  • Concomitant digoxin therapy

Side Effects

  • Oral administration of Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the GI tract
  • May cause constipation
  • Rarely produces hypercalcemia when large doses are given to patients with chronic renal failure
  • Allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, drowsiness
  • Skin rash reported following administration of Vitamin D Supplements

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol during pregnancy
  • Overdoses should be avoided to prevent permanent hypercalcaemia
  • Vitamin D3 passes into breast milk and should be considered when giving additional vitamin D to the child

Precautions & Warnings

  • Serum calcium levels and renal function should be monitored during long-term treatment
  • Caution in elderly patients on concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics
  • Caution in patients with a high tendency to calculus formation
  • Caution in patients with impairment of renal function
  • Caution in immobilized patients with osteoporosis
  • Caution when prescribing other drugs containing vitamin D
  • Frequent monitoring of serum calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion in cases of additional calcium or vitamin D intake

Overdose Effects

  • Can lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
  • Symptoms may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, polydipsia, polyuria, bone pain, nephrocalcinosis, nephrolithiasis, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias
  • Persistently high calcium levels may lead to irreversible renal damage and soft tissue calcification
