Description
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial AR
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Inhibition of cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4) production and release
- Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
- Contributes to airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, and altered cellular activity
- Dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily for adults and adolescents with asthma
- Dosage for pediatric patients: 5 mg tablet once daily (6-14 years), 4 mg tablet once daily (2-5 years)
- Dosage for pediatric patients: 4 mg oral granules once daily (6 months-5 years)
- No dosage adjustment required in patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment recommended in patients with renal insufficiency
- Pharmacokinetic profile and oral bioavailability similar in elderly and younger adults
- No adverse interactions with various commonly prescribed drugs
- Not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Montium can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise-induced bronchospasm
- Common side effects: diarrhea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon side effects: anxiety, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle complaints, sleep disorders
- Rare side effects: angioedema, concentration impaired, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations
- Crosses the placenta following oral dosing in rats and rabbits
- Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother
- Store in cool & dry place below 30°C, protect from light & moisture
