Interaction
- Diminishes the antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- Delays the absorption of Novas by antacids & Sucralfate
- Increases adverse effects when taken with Aspirin
- Reduces the natriuretic effect of diuretics
- Enhances the toxicity of Methotrexate
- Increases the risk of GI bleeding when taken with Warfarin or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Treatment of perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects like heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System side effects like headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological side effects like pruritus (itching), purpura
- Cardiovascular side effects like edema, palpitation
- Other side effects like visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effects on the fetus
- Causes a delay in parturition in animals
- Associated with premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants born to mothers taking Naproxen
- Excreted in small amounts in breast milk
- Balancing of benefits to the mother against the possible risks to the fetus required in the first and third trimesters
- Considered by some authorities to be too small to be harmful to a breast-fed infant
- Some manufacturers recommend that breastfeeding should be avoided during Naproxen therapy
Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of renal papillary necrosis and other abnormal renal pathology with long-term administration
- Reports of acute interstitial nephritis, hematuria, proteinuria and occasionally nephrotic syndrome associated with Novas-containing products
- Eliminated primarily by the kidneys
- Use with caution in patients with significantly impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance advised in these patients
- Caution for patients with creatinine clearance of less than 20ml/min
- Reports of moderate to severe jaundice attributed to Novas
