Description
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Used to treat asthma, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and allergic rhinitis
- Inhibits cysteinyl leukotriene receptor
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 4-5 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage adjustment in hepatic insufficiency not required
- No recommended dosage adjustment in renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly and younger adults
Pharmacology
- Inhibits cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Blocks airway edema and smooth muscle contraction associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis
Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (Seasonal & Perennial)
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of several drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs in clinical studies
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, headache, nausea, vomiting
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, malaise
- Rare: Angioedema, memory loss, palpitations, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Avoid use as monotherapy for exercise-induced bronchospasm

- Most common adverse experiences were consistent with the safety profile
- Usual supportive measures recommended in the event of overdose
