Indications
- Reduction of elevated total cholesterol
- Lowering LDL cholesterol
- Triglyceride reduction
- Increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase
- Reduction of cholesterol synthesis
- Increase in hepatic LDL receptors
- Inhibition of cholesterol absorption by the small intestine
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage range of 10/10 mg to 80/20 mg daily
- Recommended starting dose of 10/10 mg or 20/10 mg daily
- Analysis of lipid levels within 2 or more weeks after initiation
Interaction
- Increased risk of myopathy with fibric acid derivatives
- Avoidance of coadministration with cyclosporine
- Enhanced risk of skeletal muscle effects with niacin combination
Contraindications
- Active liver disease
- Hypersensitivity to any component
