Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Prevention of anaemia of pregnancy
- Necessary routine administration of iron
Description
- General properties of iron salts
- Facilitates O2 transport via haemoglobin
- Replaces iron found in haemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapeutic dose for adults: 3-4½ teaspoonful daily
- Maintenance dose for adults: 1½ teaspoonful daily
- Initial dose for children under 1 year: ¼ th teaspoonful thrice daily
- Dose for children 1-5 years: 1 teaspoonful thrice daily
- Dose for children 6-12 years: 1½ teaspoonful twice daily
- Mix with water or fruit juice to avoid temporary staining of teeth
- Do not mix with milk
Interaction
- Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with Tetracycline
- Iron salt should be given 3 hours before or 2 hours after Tetracycline
- Absorption decreases in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in haemachromatosis and haemosiderosis
- Not to be given to patients receiving repeated blood transfusion
- Not for patients with anaemia not produced by iron deficiency
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting
- Reduced side effects by taking it with or immediately after food
- Continuous administration may cause constipation
- Liquid medication may cause temporary staining of teeth
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with caution in patients with iron storage or absorption disease
- Administered with caution in patients with haemoglobinopathies
- Administered with caution in patients with existing gastrointestinal disease
