Dextromethorphan 10 mg/5 ml (Syrup)

Indications

• Chronic dry cough
• Unproductive cough
• Acute dry cough interfering with normal function or sleep

Composition

• Syrup: Each 5 ml sugar-free syrup contains Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide BP 10 mg

Pharmacology

• Cough suppressant with central action on the cough center in the medulla
• Rapid absorption from GI tract
• Little sedative activity
• Metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine

Dosage & Administration

• Adults & Children over 12 years: 15 to 30 mg three to four times per day
• Children between 6 and 12 years: 5-15 mg up to four times per day
• Children between 2 and 6 years: 2.5-5 mg up to four times per day

Interaction

• Fatal interactions reported with phenelzine
• Contraindicated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors

Contraindications

• Contraindicated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors
• Prescribed with caution in liver disease

Side Effects

• Rare adverse effects
• Nausea and dizziness sometimes occur
• No analgesia or addiction
• Excitation, confusion, respiratory depression may occur after overdosage

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Avoid in the first three months of pregnancy
• Avoid in nursing mothers due to lack of information on secretion into breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Do not use for coughs associated with smoking, asthma, or emphysema
• Do not use for productive coughs
