Pharmacology
- Analgesic properties
- Antipyretic properties
- Weak anti-inflammatory activity
- Acts primarily in the CNS
- Increases pain threshold
- Inhibits COX-1, COX-2, and COX-3 enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 1-2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours
- Maximum adult dosage: 4 gm (8 tablets) daily
- Children (6-12 years) dosage: ½ to 1 tablet 3 to 4 times daily
- Extended Release Tablet dosage for adults & children over 12 years: Two tablets every 6 to 8 hours (max 6 tablets in 24 hours)
Interaction
- Diminished ability with barbiturates, tricyclic antidepressants, and alcohol
- Increased hepatotoxicity with alcohol
- Chronic ingestion of anticonvulsants or oral steroid contraceptives
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Paracetamol

- Hazard of overdose in non-cirrhotic alcoholic liver disease
Overdose Effects
- Possible liver damage in adults with 10g or more intake
- Symptoms: pallor, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Immediate treatment essential
