Umox 500 mg (Capsule)

Indications

• Ear, nose and throat infections
• Lower respiratory tract infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Genito-urinary tract infections
• Venereal disease
• Dental abscess therapy
• H.pylori infection treatment

Pharmacology

• Broad spectrum penicillin
• Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
• Inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis
• Stable in gastric acid
• Rapid oral absorption

Dosage

• Adult dosage: 250 mg three times daily
• Increase up to 500 mg three times daily for severe infections
• Children dosage: 125 mg three times daily
• Increase up to 250 mg three times daily for severe infections
• Recommended dosage for specific infections

Administration

• Reconstituted suspension administration
• Can be administered with milk, fruit juice, water

Interaction

• Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
• Affects gut flora and estrogen reabsorption

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients

Side Effects

• Mild and transient side effects
• Diarrhoea
• Indigestion
• Occasional rash
• Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• US FDA pregnancy category: B
• No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
• Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
• Excreted in human milk
• Caution in lactating mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Possibility of superinfections
• Appropriate therapy for superinfections
• Discontinue if superinfections occur
