Description

Indications

  • Treatment of severe systemic infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic and eye, ear, nose, and throat infections

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
  • Acts by interfering with the enzyme DNA gyrase needed for bacterial DNA synthesis
  • Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Half-life of about 3.5 hours
  • Excreted in the urine as unchanged drug and biologically active metabolites

Dosage

  • Adult dosage range: 100-750 mg twice daily, depending on infection type
  • Different dosages for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and gonorrhea
  • Dosage adjustment required in patients with impaired renal function
  • Different dosages for adolescents and children
  • Treatment duration varies based on infection severity

Administration Instructions

Interactions

  • Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids, sucralfate, products containing calcium, iron, zinc, or milk
  • Dietary calcium within a meal does not significantly affect absorption of Uprocin
