Uzone 15 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Adjunct to diet and exercise for improved glycaemic control in type II diabetes
• Monotherapy and combination therapy with sulphonylurea, Metformin or Insulin

Pharmacology

• Belongs to thiazolidinediones class of oral antidiabetic agents
• Decreases insulin resistance in the periphery and liver
• Increases insulin dependent glucose disposal
• Decreases hepatic glucose output
• Improves abnormality in lipid metabolism by activating PPAR-gamma

Dosage & Administration

• Can be taken once daily without regard to meals
• Initial dose at 15 mg or 30 mg once daily, can be increased up to 45 mg once daily
• Maximum recommended daily dose should not exceed 45 mg
• Individualized management of antidiabetic therapy

Interaction

• Reduces plasma concentration of ethinyl oestradiol and norethindrone in oral contraceptives by approximately 30%
• May result in loss of contraception

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components

Side Effects

• Incidence and types of adverse events reported in clinical trials
• Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infection, headache, sinusitis, myalgia, tooth disorder, and pharyngitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the foetus
• Not known whether it is secreted in human milk
• Should not be administered to lactating women

Precautions & Warnings

• Should not be used in Type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis
• Caution in case of combination antidiabetic therapy and hepatic insufficiency
• Regular monitoring of liver enzymes
