Lovapres Plus 5 mg+20 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Treatment of hypertension alone or with other antihypertensive agents
• Lowering blood pressure
• Initial therapy in patients likely to need multiple antihypertensive agents

Pharmacology

• Dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker
• Inhibits transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle
• Greater effect on vascular smooth muscle cells than on cardiac muscle cells
• Peripheral arterial vasodilator
• Selective blocker of AT1 receptor

Dosage & Administration

• Initial dose of 5/20 mg once daily
• Titration as needed up to a maximum of 10/40 mg once daily
• Lower starting dose of Amlodipine for elderly patients

Interaction

• Potential attenuation by NSAIDs including selective COX-2 inhibitors
• Monitoring of blood pressure, renal function and electrolytes

Contraindications

• Co-administration with Aliskiren in patients with diabetes

Side Effects

• Peripheral edema
• Headache
• Flushing
• Dizziness
• Sprue-like enteropathy

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category D
• Avoid use in 2nd and 3rd trimesters
• Discontinuation when pregnancy is detected
• Unknown excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Caution in volume- or salt-depleted patients
• Caution in patients with severe aortic stenosis
• Caution in patients with severe obstructive coronary artery disease

Use in Special Populations

• Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric patients
• No overall differences in safety or effectiveness observed in subjects 65 years of age or older
• No studies in patients with renal impairment
• Initial therapy not recommended in hepatically impaired patients
