Description

Rivastigmine is a carbamate derivative used for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderately severe Alzheimer's dementia and Idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

Dosage Form

Dosage Instructions

  • Capsules:
    • Initial Dose: 1.5 mg twice a day
    • Dose Titration: Increase to 3 mg, 4.5 mg, then 6 mg twice a day based on tolerability
    • Maintenance Dose: 3 mg to 6 mg twice a day
  • Transdermal Patch:
    • Initial Dose: 4.6 mg/24 hours
    • Dose Titration: Increase to 9.5 mg/24 hours, then maximum dosage of 13.3 mg/24 hours
    • Specific Dosage for Mild to Moderate and Severe Alzheimer's Disease

Administration

Twice a day, with morning and evening meals

Pharmacological Action

Cholinesterase inhibitor that increases acetylcholine concentration at cholinergic synapses

Interaction

  • Exaggerates effects of succinylcholine-type muscle relaxants
  • Caution with anaesthetic agents
  • No pharmacokinetic interaction with certain drugs

Hypersensitivity to the active substance or other carbamate derivatives
