Description

  • Phenyltriazine antiepileptic medication
  • Used to treat certain types of epilepsy and bipolar disorder
  • Controls epileptic seizures by inhibiting voltage-sensitive sodium channels
  • Stabilizes neuronal membranes
  • Inhibits presynaptic excitatory neurotransmitter release

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits voltage-sensitive sodium channels
  • Modulates release of excitatory neurotransmitters
  • Binds to inactive sodium channels
  • Suppresses release of glutamate
  • Displays binding properties to various receptors

Dosage & Administration

  • Escalation regimen for patients older than 12 years with epilepsy
  • Escalation regimen for patients aged 2 to 12 years with epilepsy
  • Escalation regimen for adults with bipolar disorder
  • Initial weight-based dosing guide for patients aged 2 to 12 years taking Valproate

Interaction

  • Increase in concentrations with Valproate
  • Decrease in concentrations with Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital, Primidone, Rifampin, estrogen-containing oral contraceptives, lopinavir/ritonavir, atazanavir/ritonavir

Pregnancy & Lactation
