Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children
Pharmacology
Fexofenadine is an inverse agonist of the H1 receptor, preventing its activation and downstream effects. It has potent and selective affinity for H1 receptors and does not cross the blood-brain barrier.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 60 mg-180 mg daily
- Children from 6 months to less than 2 years: 15 mg-30 mg daily
Interaction
Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole may increase fexofenadine levels in plasma. No interaction with omeprazole was observed.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Nervous system disorders: headache, drowsiness, dizziness
- Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea
- Immune system disorders: hypersensitivity reactions, angioedema, systemic anaphylaxis
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended unless clearly necessary. Limited data on the content of human milk after administering Fexofenadine hydrochloride.
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with care in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with cardiovascular disease should be warned about potential adverse reactions
Use in Special Populations
- Renal impairment: 60 mg once daily recommended as starting dose
- Elderly patient: Pharmacokinetics altered in individuals over 65 years of age
Overdose Effects
Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth. No established maximum tolerated dose.
