Description
- Combines two antacids (Calcium carbonate and Sodium bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium alginate)

Pharmacology
- Works by neutralizing excess stomach acid
- Forms a protective barrier over the stomach contents
- Physical mode of action
- Reacts rapidly with gastric acid to form an alginate raft
- Raft interacts with and caps the acid pocket in the stomach
- Reduces esophageal acid exposure
- Floats on stomach contents impeding gastro-esophageal reflux for up to 4 hours
- Protects esophagus from Acid, Pepsin, and Bile
- Can be refluxed into the esophagus exerting a demulcent effect
- Entraps bile and pepsin within its structure
- Includes Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate, and Alginate
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children over 12 years: 10-20 mL oral suspension after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
- Children 6 to 12 years: 5-10 mL oral suspension after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
- Children under 6 years: Not recommended
- Elderly: No dose modifications necessary
- Adults and children 12 years and over: Take two to four chewable tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
- Children under 12 years: Tablets should be given only on medical advice
- No dose modification necessary for hepatic impairment
- Caution with highly restricted salt diet in renal insufficiency
Interaction
- Consider a time-interval of 2 hours between Gaviscon intake and other medicinal products
- Especially with Tetracyclines, Digoxine, Fluoroquinolone, Iron salt, Ketoconazole, Neuroleptics, Thyroid Hormones, Penicillamine, beta-blockers, Glucocorticoid, Chloroquine, Biphosphonates (diphosphonates), and Estramustine
Contraindications
- Known or suspected hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or any of the excipients

- Sensation of swelling with large doses
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safe for use during pregnancy if clinically needed
- No effects shown in breastfed newborns/infants of treated mothers
- No negative effect on parental or offspring fertility or reproduction
Precautions & Warnings
- Each 20ml dose contains 254.5 mg of sodium
- Care needed in treating patients with hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis, and recurrent calcium containing renal calculi
- Not recommended for children under 12 years without medical advice
- Consideration for highly restricted salt diet and aspartame content
- Not recommended for more than 7 days continuously without medical advice
- May mask symptoms of other serious medical conditions
- Not for use in patients with impaired renal function/insufficiency and hypophosphatemia
- Potential for allergic reactions
