Arimidex 1 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Adjuvant treatment for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer
• First-line treatment for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive or unknown locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer
• Second-line treatment for advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women with disease progression following tamoxifen therapy

Pharmacology

• Non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor
• Suppression of estrogen biosynthesis in peripheral tissues and cancer tissue
• Inhibition of the aromatase enzyme

Dosage & Administration

• One tablet of 1 mg taken once a day
• Continued use for patients with advanced breast cancer until tumor progression
• Optimal duration of therapy for adjuvant treatment in postmenopausal women is unknown
• No dose changes recommended for patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic impairment
• No dose changes necessary for patients with renal impairment

Interaction

• Co-administration with tamoxifen reduces plasma concentration
• Estrogen-containing therapies should not be used
• Unlikely to affect other drugs due to cytochrome P450 inhibition

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in pregnancy and premenopausal women
• Hypersensitivity to the drug or any of the excipients

Side Effects

• Serious reactions including skin lesions, ulcers, allergic reactions, and changes in liver function
• Common adverse reactions such as hot flashes, asthenia, arthritis, hypertension, nausea, osteoporosis, fractures, insomnia, and edema

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category X
• Unknown excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Increased incidence of ischemic cardiovascular events in patients with pre-existing heart disease
• Bone mineral density decrease compared to baseline
• Elevated serum cholesterol

Overdose Effects

• Clinical trials have been conducted with well-tolerated dosages
• No specific antidote
