Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
- Doxophylline is a novel bronchodilator
- Inhibits phosphodiesterase 4
- Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
- Selectively inhibits adenosine A1 and A2 receptors
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for Children above 12 years: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for Children 6-12 years: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily
Interaction
- Not to be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
- Caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Contraindicated in patients with acute myocardial infarction, hypotension, and during lactation

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Factors may reduce hepatic clearance of xanthine derivatives
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, and renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse may be necessary
