Pharmacology
Hydrocortisone inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme phospholipase A2. It reduces various vasoactive agents released during inflammation and controls the rate of protein synthesis.
DosageAndAdministration
- The initial dosage may vary from 20 mg to 240 mg per day
- Dosage requirements are variable and must be individualized
- Constant monitoring is needed in regard to drug dosage
- If, after long-term therapy, the drug is to be stopped, it is recommended that it be withdrawn gradually, rather than abruptly
- Adult initial dose for IM or slow IV injection or infusion is 100 mg to 500 mg, depending on the severity of the condition
- Children's doses vary by age
Interaction
- Drugs that induce hepatic enzymes may increase the clearance of corticosteroids
- Drugs such as Troleandomycin and Ketoconazole may inhibit the metabolism of corticosteroids and decrease their clearance
- Dose of corticosteroid should be titrated to avoid steroid toxicity
Contraindications
Severe systemic fungal infections and known hypersensitivity to any component of this product
